Framing and sizes

Every print can be sent unframed, or framed to order in black ash or natural oak. Frames are made by hand two streets from the studio.

The frames

Unframed. The print alone, with a 3 cm white paper border around the image where the artist signs and numbers it. It is sent flat between rigid boards.

Black ash. A stained ash moulding with a 2 cm face, a 6 cm white museum mount, matte acrylic glazing and a hanging wire. It suits the black-and-white prints and the brighter colour studies.

Natural oak. The same profile in oiled oak. It is warmer and lighter, and suits the coast and desert prints.

The framed size is the image size plus the mount and the moulding on each side: a print with a 40 × 30 cm image is 56 × 46 cm framed. Every print page gives the exact framed size for each option and shows the frame on a wall at scale.

Choosing a size

As a rough guide, the framed print should be between half and two thirds the width of the furniture under it, and its centre should hang about 145 cm from the floor. On each print page, the On the wall view draws your chosen size and frame beside a 160 cm sideboard so you can judge it before you buy.

Light

Pigment prints are very stable, but no print likes direct sun. Hang them away from south-facing windows and away from radiators.

Questions

Why do the large sizes have smaller editions?

Large prints take longer to make and check, and fewer people have the wall for them. A small edition keeps each one scarce.

Can I frame an unframed print myself?

Yes. Leave the white border in place and use an acid-free mount; never dry-mount or trim a numbered print.

Is the glazing glass?

No. We use a matte acrylic that blocks most UV light, weighs half as much as glass and does not shatter in transit.
