About

A print studio that publishes small editions

Proof is two printers and four photographers. We make every print in our own studio, keep a ledger of every number, and close an edition when it is sold.

    Proof

The artist chooses a photograph and we make test strips on two or three papers. The approved proof is signed and kept in the studio as the reference for the whole edition.

  2. 02

    Edition

We agree the sizes and the number of prints in each size with the artist. Those numbers go on the print page and never change.

  3. 03

    Print and sign

Each print is made to order, checked against the proof, dried for a day and signed and numbered by the artist in pencil.

  4. 04

    Ledger

The number, the buyer's name and the date go into our edition ledger, and the certificate is written from it.

We started Proof in 2021 in a unit on Mill Lane with one wide-format printer and a drying rack. The idea was simple: photographers we admired were selling unlimited, unsigned prints online, and we wanted to make fewer, better ones and keep honest records of them.

We still print everything ourselves, on cotton papers with pigment inks that are rated to last well over a century in normal indoor light. Frames are made by a joiner two streets away, to the size of each print.

Artists are paid half of every sale, and they see the same ledger we do. If you would like to visit the studio and see prints before you buy, write to us and we will arrange a time.
